Bethesda recently surprised The Elder Scrolls franchise fans by releasing Oblivion Remastered without prior notice or announcements. One such mechanic is picking locks to access doors and chests.

Although the overall process of lockpicking is fairly simple in Oblivion Remastered, you could find yourself stuck unless you know what to do in the game. Here’s everything you need to know about picking locks in the remastered version of 2006’s game of the year.

Picking locks is an integral part of exploring the vast, open world of Oblivion Remastered. However, you need to find and gather lockpicks to go through the process of picking a lock. Thankfully, there are several sources from which you can find lockpicks. You can not only explore chests, barrels, and crates hidden inside dungeons but also search the corpses of defeated enemies for lockpicks.

Additionally, you can also purchase lockpicks from NPCs who sell illegal items after joining the Thieves Guild. One such NPC is Ongar, who can be found in Bruma and sells lockpicks for six gold each. Nevertheless, finding lockpicks through exploration will save you the additional cost, but will take more time to explore through dungeons and corpses for this item.

How to use a lockpick

Once you have secured a lockpick, the rest of the process is fairly simple. You will need to head over to a lock and interact with it to launch the lockpicking minigame. The purpose of this minigame is to align the tumblers of the lock at the exact moment when it taps the top of the lock using the lockpick. Once the respective tumbler is set in position, it will turn dark and remain in place while you position the other tumblers.

Locks that are harder to pick usually feature more tumblers, whereas simpler locks have a much lower tumbler count. You can open the lock once you have set all the tumblers to the unlocking position. Additionally, the entire process becomes a lot easier to execute once you level up your Security skill in the game.

This process is vital for exploring behind locked doors and grabbing treasures and loot hidden inside chests and treasure troves. That said, you can always use console commands and cheats to give you a helping hand when it comes to a lot of aspects in the game.
